Endurance The origins of the race date back to a bar bet in 1977 among Navy officers stationed in Hawaii. The subject of their debate: Who are the best athletes – swimmers, bikers or runners? Just another race? Not a chance! Contestants swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles then run 26.2 miles. The 112 mile bike portion of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship can be compared to what one encounters in life. It is relatively long, sometimes exciting, sometimes depressing…downhills are easy, uphills are hard, and variables are numerous.
